Strong winds deter beach crowds and create beach erosion that can pose hazards to lifeguards, surfers, and tourists alike.

When there is moderate to heavy beach erosion, beach closures are often required to provide additional safety improvements.

More than 10% of Florida's beaches have been closed this year.

The closure of Miami Beach can result in an even greater toll for Miami-Dade County and its citizens.

When a beach closure takes effect, Miami Beach will experience temporary closures in all public and private areas, including the following:

Public swimming areas, including private areas in swimming pools and on beach areas.

Shark swimming areas for kids and pets.

Public parks, beaches, and beaches for recreation.

Some areas of the City of Miami Beach may have additional closures.


Tidelands State Park closes Friday and Saturday and is closed for swimming as of March 1 and 2. The closed areas will remain closed until further notice.

St. Johns City State Park closes March 1 and 2 and is closed for swimming as of March 5 and 6.

Beach access to St. Johns, Florida's largest and tallest national park, may be limited during this weather window.

"We need this more than ever," Dr. van Reijnen said. She believes the recovery process is "involving the whole population as a whole."
